Generally Speaking:
Please avoid logos and character clothing. They are distracting from the subject – you! And unless you are wearing a sports uniform, sneakers should be avoided… it’s strange, but they are glaringly obvious in photos. Canvas shoes like Chuck Taylors or Keen type sneakers are an exception and quite honestly, photograph quite well.
Because peeling skin does not look attractive in photos, please avoid over-sunning or sunburn. Excessive tanning will make you appear orange. Please let us know if you want to show any tattoos that you may have.
Do not worry about minor breakouts, or complexion problems. These can be fixed post-session.
I encourage you to bring items that help define who you are: a guitar, soccer ball, hobbies, even your car. Bringing a pet is okay too; however, please make sure there is someone there to take of the pet while you are being photographed. Remember, these images are about self-expression, who you are. Get your creative juices flowing while you prepare for your session.
Ladies:
Small details matter, please have your nails neatly trimmed and polished. Don’t forget your toes! As tempting as it might be, I do not recommend trying out any new hairstyles or coloring in the event you are not satisfied with the outcome, however a hair trim is a great idea. Bring along any hair accessories for easy style changes.
As for makeup, slightly heavier makeup photographs well. However, be sure not to over-due it. Pay extra attention to the eye makeup, avoiding clumps in the mascara and keeping under eye, eyeliner lighter than normal. It’s very easy to go from rockin’ to raccoon in a very quick heartbeat. The camera sees everything and exaggerates it. Also, be sure to blend your foundation onto your neck. To eliminate shine, please bring along translucent powder.
Now for clothing: for black and white images, wearing black is best. A black top and a favorite pair of jeans will look fabulous in black and white images, creating a nice contrast between your skin and clothing. Clothes that flatter you are best—too big or too small, clothing may make you look larger. Tops should be sleeveless or covering the elbow. Elbows are strange looking body parts, and short sleeves draw attention to them.
Gentlemen:
Want to wear a hat for some of your images? Great, but please do not wear the hat until it is time for the shot. This is because a hat can leave red lines along your forehead. Like suggested to the ladies, it is recommended that you do not try out any new hair styles right before your session, just in case you are not happy with the outcome.
Bring something that will look good in black and white images, such as a pair of jeans and a black shirt, and also bring some clothing for color images – don’t be afraid of bold colors and patterns. Jackets, coats, ties, and other accessories are great to put on for a few shots too.
Lastly, relax! This will be a fun experience! A memory that will last a lifetime.
