I love to shop at the local farmer’s market. I don’t get down there as often as I would like, but each time I go, I’m always glad I did. This week I picked up cilantro, rhubarb (see the pie post below!) and beautiful eggs! Eggs from Aracuana chickens are naturally blue and green in colour. They are incredibly beautiful. My first go round at the market, I didn’t have the hands to carry delicate eggs, so I was ever so happy that the farmer was still there and still had some of his beautiful eggs.

In addition to keeping farmers in business and supporting the local economy, local eggs from free range chickens are MUCH better for you. A recent article in Bon Appetit magazine was explaining that most of our overly processed and manufactured food… even the regular items, like eggs, meat and dairy… have limited nutritional value because of the conditions the animals are raised under, and the feed they are fed. Animals that are allowed to graze naturally, transfer the nutrients from their diets into the food we eat. So here’s to supporting the local economy, the small farmer AND our health!
